The Boot

To the north, Italy shares a border with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The rest of the country is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian, Mediterranean, Ionian and Adriatic seas. Most of Italy, of course, is known as “the boot,” but the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Elba, among others, also belong to the republic.

The country is best divided into three, starting with northern Italy, consisting of the areas of Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto, among others. Central Italy consists of the more famous areas the Marches, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. The areas in southern Italy are the least known, but still worth considering! These include Basilicata, Abruzzo Calabria and Apulia.

Most of Italy has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Naturally, it is cooler in the north than in the south because of the higher, mountainous Alps and Dolomites.
